Town twinning is a concept whereby towns or cities in different geographical and political areas twin to foster human contact and cultural links .
This movement started in Europe soon after the Second World War. Its aim is to foster greater links among European cities and promote joint projects.
Although the idea is much more popular in Europe than in other places, nowadays it has spread throughout other continents, giving way to many interesting town twinnings

Town twinning is a leading issue in the international relations of Gijón City Council. We are gradually twinning cities we have a special relationship with: Havana, Albuquerque and Puerto Vallarta in America, Niort and Novorossiysk in Europe and Smara in Western Sahara are the cities belonging to the still small town twinning network
